Ms. Miya Baratang

Baratang Miya is an award-winning tech founder and a software developer with 18 years experience in the tech industry. Baratang is the Founder of Girlhype Women Who Code Academy, the first African software engineering academy focusing on women and girls, the Founder of Buza App and serves on the South African Internet Governance Forum (ZAIGF) Multi-Stakeholder Committee as their deputy chair.

She has worked tirelessly to mobilize governments, corporations, and civil society to invest in women and girls digital and technology skills education, having worked with companies like Adobe, Mozilla, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and UN Women to close the gender gap in tech. Her dedication to educating women in the tech space has also seen her being recognised as an Emerging Leader in Tech Education and Entrepreneurship by the US government through the TechWomen program in 2015, and leading gender inclusion discussions. 

Baratang’s expertise have also been sought by the United Nations and South African School on Internet Governance Forum. She has also served as an executive board member of many boards including Silicon Cape and the national Black IT Forum, and is a strategic national partner in the "We the Internet" initiative.  Baratang holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Psychology, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing Management  from University of Cape Town, and is a graduate of the International School of Technology in Brazil.
