IGF 2023 Town Hall #73 Intersectional Feminist Data Governance: Building Equitable

Our session will delve deep into the intricate discourse of feminist data governance methodologies, positioning intersectionality as a fundamental principle. Understanding data through an intersectional lens, we recognise that gender, race, ethnicity, class, and other identities do not exist separately from each other but are interwoven and interconnected. This intersectional approach ensures that data governance models do not perpetuate existing inequalities but protect and benefit all, including the most marginalised and underrepresented groups.

In the context of the Global South, where historical, economic, and social disparities have often led to digital exclusion, we will explore how intersectional feminist data governance can safeguard the rights of minority groups. By creating and implementing data governance systems that genuinely reflect the diversity of user experiences and needs, we can strive for a fair distribution of data benefits and profits. In our research and engagement, we have seen the challenges that result in low engagement in the regional data governance mechanisms, which lead to the further disenfranchisement of gender data. The session discussants will highlight regional and country-specific examples to paint a picture of the importance of Intersectional Feminist Data Governance.

Moreover, we will look at the potential of these methodologies to inform the development of community-centric technology, which can contribute to the empowerment of marginalised voices in the digital landscape. Participants will engage in dynamic discussions, unpacking the nuances of these models, exploring best practices, identifying potential challenges, and brainstorming effective strategies for global cooperation and policymaking to promote more equitable digital futures.
