Targets: A panel on strategic litigation regarding gender-based digital violence can be related to various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to gender. Below are some relevant SDGs and an explanation of their connection to the issue of gender-based digital violence: SDG 5: Gender Equality: This goal focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. A panel on strategic litigation regarding gender-based digital violence contributes to promoting gender equality by addressing the inequalities and discrimination that women and girls face online. SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities: This goal aims to reduce inequalities within and among countries. Gender-based digital violence amplifies existing inequalities and perpetuates discrimination. The panel on strategic litigation seeks to address these inequalities and promote justice and equity. SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions: This goal seeks to promote peaceful, just, and inclusive societies and strengthen institutions for accountability and access to justice. The panel on strategic litigation focuses on seeking justice for victims of gender-based digital violence and strengthening legal and judicial institutions to address this issue. Gender digital violence has emerged as an increasingly concerning issue in Latin America. With the rapid advancement of technology and growing dependence on digital platforms, forms of violence and harassment against women have extended to the online sphere. This includes harassment on social media, non-consensual dissemination of intimate images (known as "revenge porn"), online stalking, and identity impersonation, among others. However, in recent years, there has also been significant growth in strategic litigation cases related to gender digital violence in the region. These cases seek to establish legal precedents and ensure the protection of women's rights in the digital realm. Strategic litigation plays a crucial role in driving changes in public policies, legislation, and judicial practices. In this digital era, it is essential to address gender-based violence in all its manifestations, including digital violence. Strategic litigation plays a fundamental role in ensuring justice and protection of women's rights online. Through this panel discussion, we hope to generate constructive dialogue and generate ideas that promote significant change in the fight against gender digital violence in Latin America. Topics to be addressed:Legal Framework and Regional Context: An analysis of existing legal frameworks in Latin America and their effectiveness in addressing gender digital violence. Are there any legal gaps? What challenges does the region face in terms of legislation and law enforcement?Experiences and Notable Cases: Presentation of strategic litigation cases related to gender digital violence before the regional judicial systems and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR). What were the challenges and legal arguments used? What impact did these cases have on the protection of women's rights?Barriers and Challenges: Identification of barriers and challenges hindering litigation related to gender digital violence in the judicial systems of Latin America and the IACHR. What are the legal, technological, and social obstacles? How can they be overcome?Actions and Solutions: Discussion of possible actions and solutions to address the identified challenges. What measures should governments, civil society organizations, and technology platforms take? The session will be projected on-site so that onsite attendees can know who is online and vice versa. There will be one onsite and one online moderator to ensure that both onsite and online audiences feel comfortable and included at all times and the conversation can flow. The Mentimeter tool will be used to provide live comments and questions for both audiences.
