Dynamic Coalition on Environment (DCE)

Introduction

The Dynamic Coalition on Environment (DCE) is a multi-stakeholder initiative under the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), committed to exploring the intricate relationship between the environment and the digital world. As technology continues to reshape societies, the DCE emphasizes the need to align innovation and economic progress with environmental sustainability.

Every technological advance is not inherently developmental. Every click, every convenience enabled by the internet, carries an unseen environmental cost. Without awareness, we risk remaining oblivious to the true impact of our digital lives.

Background

Established on the foundation of the IGF’s Policy Network on Environment, and its extensive research and findings, the DCE aims to bridge the gap between policy recommendations and actionable strategies. It recognizes that environmental well-being is deeply connected to human health, economic stability, education, and global cooperation.

Current Focus

This year, the DCE is centered on the theme “Environment as Economy and Economy as Environment”, reflecting the urgent need to redefine economic success in ecological terms. The coalition seeks to challenge traditional growth paradigms and advocate for a future where environmental preservation and economic progress are not mutually exclusive but mutually reinforcing.

Core Objectives

  • Examine the environmental implications of the digital age.

  • Encourage sustainable technological development.

  • Translate environmental research into implementable policies.

  • Foster cross-sector collaboration for greener digital practices.

  • Raise awareness about the environmental footprint of digital technologies.

Strategic Focus Areas

  • Greening Economies: Promoting circular economies and sustainable business models.

  • Environmental Impact of Tech: Assessing and mitigating the ecological cost of emerging technologies.

  • Digital Tools for Sustainability: Leveraging data and innovation for environmental monitoring and resource management.

  • Policy for a Sustainable Digital Future: Advocating regulations that align tech growth with environmental goals.

  • Environmental Literacy through Digital Platforms: Spreading awareness and fostering responsible behavior online.

  • Resilience through Tech: Using digital solutions to build climate-resilient economies.

  • Data-Driven Environmental Governance: Harnessing digital data to inform and improve environmental policies.
